Enzymes can only one on one type of food but else do you think may affect how well they work? Enzymes are affected by Temperature and pH What temperature do you think your enzymes work best at?

Trypsin is an enzyme which breaks down protein. If Typsin is added to milk it will break down the milk turning it from cloudy to see-through How could you use Trypsin to find out how temperature affects how well enzymes work

Procedure Take 3 boiling tubes, and fill them each with 10ml of milk – place them in a rackTake 3 boiling tubes, and fill them each with 10ml of milk – place them in a rack Add 10ml of cold Trypsin to one boiling tube with milk in, and begin the timer – time how long it takes for the solution to become transparentAdd 10ml of cold Trypsin to one boiling tube with milk in, and begin the timer – time how long it takes for the solution to become transparent Repeat this with the second boiling tube, but this time add 10ml warm TrypsinRepeat this with the second boiling tube, but this time add 10ml warm Trypsin Repeat this with the third boiling tube, but this time add 10ml boiling TrypsinRepeat this with the third boiling tube, but this time add 10ml boiling Trypsin Record all your resultsRecord all your results How will you know when it has gone see-through?

Assessment What does you experiment tell you about enzymes? Try to explain why this happened? Explain how ACCURATE you think your results were? How could you make your results more accurate?

Temperature This experiment shows that enzymes work best at a certain temperatureThis experiment shows that enzymes work best at a certain temperature If it is too cold the enzyme takes a long time to break the food downIf it is too cold the enzyme takes a long time to break the food down But if it is too hot the enzyme may not function at all – it has been denaturedBut if it is too hot the enzyme may not function at all – it has been denatured Enzymes in the human body usually denature (stop working) above 45 o CEnzymes in the human body usually denature (stop working) above 45 o C

Quiz

1. Enzymes are made of protein. 2. Enzymes only work in acid solutions. 3. Enzymes can only break down molecules. 4. A protease is an enzyme that breaks down protein into smaller molecules. 8A Digestion - True or False? True or False? TRUE FALSE TRUE

1. An enzyme works best at a particular temperature. 2. Most enzymes in the human body work best at about 57°C. 3. Enzymes work best in boiling water. 4. Snakes produce one enzyme that can digest everything in its victim from the skin to the bones. 5. Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch. 8A Digestion - True or False? True or False? TRUE FALSE TRUE
