Topographical Maps
2
What is a topographical map? A detailed map showing physical and cultural features and the elevation, or height, of the land Elevation is shown by numbered contour lines. They are imaginary lines that connect points at the same height above sea level
3
When would you use a topographical map? Hiking in the woods Military Search and rescue Highway construction Etc.

The Grid System Topographical maps have a grid system too Horizontal lines run W E Vertical lines run N S Not the same as latitude and longitude Only help us pinpoint locations on the specific topographical map There is 1 km of real distance between two lines
5
Finding Locations on a Topographical Map 1. Start with your vertical lines, between what 2 lines is your location? eg. pg. 10 of textbook- Stanhope Beach is located between lines 91 and 92 2. There is 10 points between 2 grid lines. If your location is some where in between the 2 lines you must decide how many tenths of a point it is at eg. Stanhope beach is at 91.5 (halfway between 91 and 92) eg. Stanhope beach is at 91.5 (halfway between 91 and 92)

3. Perform the same steps with the horizontal lines eg. Stanhope Beach is at 40.9 eg. Stanhope Beach is at 40.9 4. The two numbers are then simplified by removing the decimals and the 6 digits are put together eg. Stanhope Beach – 915409 eg. Stanhope Beach – 915409 5. Given the 6 digit number you can now find this location on the map
