3. Niccolo Machiavelli Machiavelli lived in exile at his family’s country estate from 1512 until his death in 1527. 4. Niccolo Machiavelli Held public office in the Florentine government in the late 1400s and early 1500s. He wrote essays and poetry and produced his most famous work, The Prince. It was a book about politics and how to gain and keep power. The Prince set the standard for the modern concept of the state and how to go about enforcing it. One of the key ideas in his book was “the end justifies the means.” According to Machiavelli, a leader should try to do only good, but should be able to do evil if necessary. Machiavelli believed that if the ends, or results, were good, then a ruler was justified in using immoral methods, or means, to achieve those results.

6. Leonardo da Vinci A ‘Renaissance Man’ is one who who was well educated and knowledgeable about a variety of subjects and skill. Da Vinci exemplified this ideal. Most famous for his artwork Also drew designs for hundreds of inventive machines. Although he never created working versions of his designs, many people believe that his sketches are early versions of armored tanks, airplanes, and helicopters. Leonardo also worked as an architect and engineer.
