First, write the unknown word on the line provided and include a page or paragraph reference. Second, write the complete sentence that contains the unknown word on the lines provided. Box the word (or words) you do not know. Then, highlight words/ideas in the sentence that can help you guess the meaning of the word. Write your guess in the left column. Explain how you used the context clues in the sentence to help you guess the meaning of the word. Finally, look up the word and check your guess. Did you guess correctly? If yes, check “My guess was correct.” If no, check “My guess was incorrect” and provide the correct definition in the bottom right column.
