Unit 2 – Day 6 Naming Hydrocarbons
2
Alkanes Alkane is a general name for any hydrocarbon that contains only C and H, connected by single bonds. Alkanes cannot contain any element other than C and H. Alkanes cannot contain double or triple bonds.

Circle the Alkanes CH 3 -CH 2 -CH 3 CH 2 =CH-CH 3 CH 3 CH 3 CH 3 -CH 2 OH
4
Naming Alkanes Alkanes are named based on how many carbons are contained in the chain. A prefix is used to identify the number of carbon atoms. # of CarbonsPrefix# of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth-6Hex- 2Eth-7Hept- 3Prop-8Oct- 4But-9Non- 5Pent-10Dec-
5
Naming Alkanes The suffix of an alkane is always –ane. This indicates that the molecule contains only C and H atoms, connected by single bonds. Examples: CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 Butane Octane
6
Multiple Bonds Hydrocarbons can also contain multiple bonds. If a hydrocarbon contains one or more double bonds, it is an alkene. They have –ene as their suffix. Example: – 1-Propene – Ethene
7
Multiple Bonds If a hydrocarbon contains one or more triple bonds, it is an alkyne. They have –yne as their suffix. Examples: – 1-Pentyne – 3-Heptyne
