3. Vission and Mission Welcome to 2013! And my wishes for our staff: a blessed year full of bright ideas and energy to make them happen !! Visie van die Fakulteit Verbind tot gehalte-onderwys, uitstekende navorsing en uitsonderlike diens om waardegedrewe onderwyspraktyke aan die diverse Suid-Afrikaanse gemeenskap te verseker. Missie van die Fakulteit Voorsien voordiens- en indiensopleiding van hoë gehalte aan opvoeders; Doen gefokusde navorsing om navorsingsgebaseerde opleiding in Opvoedkunde te bevorder. Integreer die navorsing en opleidingsmissie met gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en bevorder wisselwerking tussen dié komponente tot uitbouing van onderrigleer en toerusting van onderwysers tot lewenslange leerders. Streef na die bevordering van gelykheid en transformasie - nie alleen wat studente en personeel aanbetref nie, maar ook in navorsing, onderrig en gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid.

7. Research Entities Development Where were we? Research Focus Area: Teaching and Learning Organisations Where are we heading? To a diversified but focused research landscape. Unit for Human Rights Education in Diverse Contexts Niche Area for Technology Enhanced Learning in Higher Education (TELHE) Niche Area in Reading Initiative for Empowerment (RIfE) Focus Area in Teaching and Learning Strategies to Promote SDL. Niche Area in Community Engagement (not sure of exact title yet) Some Projects with a view to development towards entity status? Learner Support, Life Orientation and Education Psychology; Environmental Education and Development; Work Environment: (Leadership and Management). And more! Faculty supported Subject Group Projects....

8. Collaboration & Partnerships (vervolg) Die Fakulteit staan tans in 9 samewerkingsooreenkomste met instansies in: Nederland, Finland, België, Kanada, VSA, VK, Australië en Tanzanië. And, now, some things new! Florida Atlantic University Visit around April 2013 to focus on: a)SDL research colloboration (further development from 2012); b)University schools and state department funding support (KKD and Dean). Cambridge Collaboration: visual literacy for enhanced language learning: pre- Grd R and Grd R. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning International Colloquium: Driestar & NWU (Driestar to host in 2013, NWU to send up to 14 delegates: info on web) University of Minnesota (UMN), VSA. Samesprekings is reeds tussen die vakgroep Geografie, Sosiale Wetenskappe en Omgewingsopvoeding van die Fakulteit en dié Universiteit aan die gang oor die interaktiewe web-leeromgewing, mobiele-leer, en die moontlike betrokkenheid by nagraadse studente.

9. Collaboration and Partnerships (continued) National: KKD Partnership (Year 3 Theme: Teachers, Learner Support and Barriers Learning): April workshop: Teachers and Ethics. Aug/Sept workshop: support for learners with barriers to learning. In 2014 STEM (Sci, Tech, Engin, Maths will be the focus - work is already underway with Faculty of Engineering, NWU). BTD National Industry-based survey of T&D and industry HRD trends. Education to participate in the organisation of the NWU Teaching and learning Conf in 2013. NWU Education Faculties to participate in inter-campus seminars on the BEd and Initial Teacher Training needs (Prof Gericke, Fourie and Balfour to set- up). BRICS-NWU Colloquium in 2013 (Technology Education from Faculty)

10. Research Turn-Around Strategy: 2013-2018 The “Bottom-line” to achieve a Turn-Around: Research work and publication is core to our work and identity as intellectuals who are also professionals. All academic staff not already with PhDs, and not within sight of retirement need to register for higher qualifications. All academic staff with PhDs need to publish, undertake project work and supervise students. Who do we need? What do we need to do it? We need our keen and energetic academic staff to move the Faculty to a position of key leadership in Education SA. We have such a staff already! We have specialised high level mentoring undertaking by appointed mentors to subject groups (done: funding obtained for 2013; appointments in place). We have Research Professors, Selected Senior Professors based in Schools working with Subject Groups/ or Subject Groupings under the leadership of Directors in Schools (done; appointments in place for 2013). We have obtained campus financial support! Lets do it!
