Japan Becomes More Powerful After Pearl Harbor, Tojo was certain Japan would become the most powerful empire. They had taken control of the U.S. islands in the Pacific Ocean and the Philippines. The Battle of the Philippines was a great loss, U.S. troops fought bravely under General Douglas MacArthur. The Japanese trapped the Americans and put them under siege. FDR ordered MacArthur to leave the Philipinnes and report to Australia. The Americans finally surrendered.

War in the Pacific Spring of 1942, Allies began to move across the Pacific Ocean The military moved closer to Japan. American bombers flew over Tokyo and bombed the city (Dolittle’s Army) After the bombing, the Japanese pushed closer to U.S. territory. They headed to Midway Island; the U.S. was on their way to meet them.

The Battle of Midway 1942 Japan versus the U.S. Navy The U.S. was able to figure out secret messages of the Japanese. They were able to locate the Japanese ships At dawn on June 4, 1942 the U.S. attacked the Japanese planes. They were surprised and suffered great losses. It was a defeat for the Japanese.

Island-hopping in the Pacific Americans were ready to capture islands held by Japan They attacked the Japanese and cut off needed supplies The Marines were used to move troops from the sea to land. Land, sea, and air forces worked together for an invasion

The Result Islands were taken back by Americans Islands became air and supply bases The U.S. began moving across the Pacific Ocean Japan was pushed back further
