1 Myton Park Primary School Nurturing Skills for Life
We are determined! Spring

2 What does it mean to be Myton Park Pupil?
What have you put in your learning bag today? The more you learn as a child, the more choices you have as a grown up! We try our best all the time.

3 If we are determined – then we persevere!
Perseverance isn’t easy. It means that even when things get really hard for us, we don’t give up. A well-known saying is: When the going gets tough, the tough get going!

4 Making Butter! You will need: double cream, transparent tub with a lid, several enthusiastic children to shake it!

5 The Frog that fell into the cream
A young frog fell into the cream, but managed to save himself. What did he do?

6 A young frog lived in a muddy pond together with his frog sisters, his frog brothers and his frog parents. He liked his home and loved his family. He’d learned to swim in that small muddy pond. ‘Keep trying,’ his family had croaked. ‘Kick hard!’ Frog kicked his legs. He didn’t give in. But often when he was swimming, he longed to explore the world beyond his pond. So one day, he hopped out of the water and headed towards a nearby farm. Frog hopped past the sheep pens and the new-born lambs, past the stables watched by the patient horse, quickly past the yard where the hens clucked and scratched, past the shed where the cows were milked, and into the cool, damp, shade of the dairy. All frogs like cool, damp places and the young frog stayed in the dairy until he decided that it was time to head back to his muddy pond. So he kicked his legs, and with a large leap, fell straight into a jug of cream! He kicked his legs again, but the sides of the jug were slippery. Frog kicked his legs, and kicked again (and again) but there was no escape. He began to grow tired and feared that he would sink to the bottom of the jug and drown. He thought of his family, safe at home in the muddy pond. He remembered how they had told him to ‘Keep trying’. ‘I will keep trying,’ the frog said to himself as he kicked his legs, again and again. But what was the use? He grew more and more tired. He thought he would drown. But still he kicked hard and kept afloat, until something odd happened. Suddenly he felt some lumps between his toes. Frog kept on kicking his legs and eventually found that he was sitting on something that looked like yellow mud. The cream had turned to butter! He gave one last tremendous leap, and was free! Back at the muddy pond, the young frog was welcomed by his worried family. ‘I almost drowned,’ he said, ‘but I kicked hard. I kept trying!’

7 Think about the attitude the frog needed to save himself
Think about the attitude the frog needed to save himself? Did he give up?

8 Did you manage to keep going and change the butter into cream?
Have go at home! Who can make the butter the quickest? Who was the best at keeping on going?

9 The Hare and the Tortoise
Are you a hare or a tortoise?

10 Are you a hare or a tortoise?
The Hare and the Tortoise Hare was proud; he boasted, 'I'm better than the rest, I always get a prize, come top in every test.' He had few friends, always drove them away. He had to win at any cost, it's rather sad to say. Tortoise was very timid, yet always tried his best And even though he worked so hard, came far behind the rest. In spite of this he'd loads of friends, was always full of fun. He never said a hurtful word - was kind to everyone. When Sports Day came a race began, they all stood on the line The rain poured down, 'twas very cold and hare began to whine. Tortoise, though, said nothing; as usual he tried and tried. Soon he reached the winning post, Hare's victory he denied. At last someone had beaten Hare, Tortoise hadn't wasted time. Hare, so busy moaning, hadn't seen him cross the line! Tortoise was a hero and he at last was praised. While Hare, who'd lost the race, was totally amazed! Tortoise, ever thoughtful, felt sorry for the Hare And held out a hand forgivingly, his friendship to declare. Hare now understood, he wouldn't get the praise And Tortoise had revealed to him the error of his ways. Tortoise had learned that plodding on would help to see him through So we should learn to do our best in all we say and do. Are you a hare or a tortoise? What were the main differences between Hare and Tortoise? How was Tortoise able to win the race? What lessons did they both learn? Have the children heard the phrase, 'If at first you don't succeed try, try again'?

11 Challenge! How long can you stand on one foot?
The idea is to try and get better at something. What do you need to do in order to improve? Are you letting someone put you off? Listen to the instructions and see if it helps. Keep looking straight ahead and not down. Press your toes into the flor. Keep you hands down by your side to keep your balance. How much have you improved? Which parts are we good at? What else do we need to know or think about? Who can I ask for advice? What do I need to do differently?

12 A video of Derek Redmond – 1992 Olympics when injury ruined his chances of winning.
What type of character did he have to be to keep going? What messages did he give about himself by not giving up? What would you do in that situation? On your values sheet this week – write down a situation where you didn’t give up. Hoe did you feel?
