Tomorrow’s schedule 1.0800: Briefing - DIVE BAY 2.0900-3 tanks later: Hardcore Friday - “Transects for Africa” 3. At conclusion of 3 tanks, Debrief. Submit class evaluation sheets. Post course: Individual assessment, request for teaching assessment

Revision: Visual transect technique 1. Dimension: 30x2x2m 2. Moving windows 3. Moving in bounds 4. The Stop, Scan, Search approach 5. When to write? 6. On what do I write, when I need to write?
4
Visual transects - Part 2 1. My transect line’s not straight? - topography (contouring) - systematic navigation deviations - why bother with bearings anyway? (bias) What if… 2. I seem to be in the wrong place ? - ‘structural zeroes’ e.g., sand - OOZE - ‘Out of Zone Experience’ or ‘How I learned to love the 30 m zone’ 3. That sheephead looks awfully familiar? 4. There’s a big rock in my way?

Questions?
6
Diver 2 - Lays tape - Count canopy fish Diver 1 - Estimates canopy - Slightly deeper to offgas The canopy transect
7
1. Counter: 1.5-2 m below surface 2. Fasten tape - follow bearing 3. Look up, keep slate up 4. Look through, not at the canopy 5. Maintain bounds 6. Second diver estimates canopy cover every 10m segment (rough estimate)
8
Bringing it all together: Today’s dive program Morning - Dive 1: Everyone: Conduct complete transects: bottom, midwater, and canopy - Materials: Slate, 2 fish data sheets, (fish cheat sheet) - Work in pairs (self-assortment - equal confidence) Afternoon - Dives 2 & 3: Exercise 1: Complete transects (live boating) Exercise 2: Clinics - Identification, sizing, transecting techniques. Go to the Paragon
9
Dive safety brief 1. Dive log - sign out and in 2. Dive procedures - ascent rate 10m/min - deep-shallow - maintain dive team 3. Communications: pay phone (lab), cell phone & VHF Ch 16 (Paragon) 4.
