What are the two keys Jesus gives us? Matthew 16:19 “keys of the kingdom of heaven” What do they do? “bind on earth” “you loose on earth” Binding/locking & loosing/unlocking key John 20:23 “forgive anyone his sins” “do not forgive them” Not forgiving or forgiving sins Which key is which?

How does God want us to use the binding/locking key? Matthew 18:15-18 What are the four steps outlined to confront an impenitent sinner? Talk to him one-on-one Take someone with you Tell it to the church Separate from him – excommunication (no fellowship) Used with the impenitent (not sorry for sin) 1 Corinthians 5:5 What are we saying by using the binding/locking key? “hand this man over to Satan” Warning that sin is serious & eternally dangerous

How does God want us to use the binding/locking key? 1 Corinthians 5:5 What are we saying by using the binding/locking key? “hand this man over to Satan” Warning that sin is serious & eternally dangerous 1 Corinthians 5:5 What is the intent? “his spirit saved” Lead them to repent of their sin Jesus wants us to use the binding/locking key to warn impenitent sinners so that they repent of their sin.

How does God want us to use the loosing/unlocking key? Luke 17:3 “if he repents…” then what? “forgive him” Used with the penitent (sorry for sin) 2 Corinthians 2:7 “forgive and” do what? “comfort him” purpose? “no be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow” Comfort with sure forgiveness in Christ Jesus wants us to use the loosing/unlocking key to comfort the penitent.

Why did God give us the keys? As a special right to forgive and comfort the penitent, but to warn and not forgive the impenitent.
