LOUIS NAPOLEON III (1852-1870) He was the nephew and heir for Napoleon I. Napoleon III was the president of the first French Republic. Spouse: Eugénie de Montijo Religion: Roman Catholic

EARLY DOMESTIC POLICIES Believed in using government resources to stimulate the national economy Government subsidies to construct Railroads Harbors Roads Canals These improvements tripled the iron production Vast reconstruction of Paris built modern broad boulevards, spacious buildings, circular plazas, public squares, and an underground sewage system.

FOREIGN POLICY He was not good at dealing with Foreign affairs. He sent troops to Mexico looking to dominate Mexican markets for French goods Installed Archduke Maximilian of Austria as the new emperor of Mexico French troops brought back to France Max became an emperor without an army Max surrendered to Liberal Mexican forces in May 1867. FOREIGN POLICY CONT…. Crimean war(1853) was a war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Napoleon got involved because he felt that Russia “insulted” France With England and France allied with the Ottoman Empire, Russia turns to Austria for help. Austria remains neutral. Russian’s lost, the war ended in March 1856 by signing yet another Treaty of Paris. 250,000 Deaths. 60% caused by disease

END OF REIGN Napoleon’s reign ended on September 4 th 1870. He later died on January 9 th 8173
