What CIPA Requires  Schools subject to CIPA must do the following: –Certify that they have certain Internet safety measures in place including the following:  Blocking or filtering pictures that: –are obscene –contain child pornography, or –when computers with Internet access are used by minors, are harmful to minors –Adopt a policy to monitor online activities of minors

What CIPA Requires (cont’d)  Schools subject to CIPA must do the following: –Adopt a policy addressing:  access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet and World Wide Web  the safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications  unauthorized access, including so-called "hacking," and other unlawful activities by minors online  unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors  restricting minors' access to materials harmful to them

Internet Filtering System  Software used: –Smart Filter, Bess Edition, “Bess” –Filtering service is purchased through Macomb ISD –Used by multiple districts in Macomb County –Filtering is automatic –Lakeview has been using a Bess filtering system for a number of years and well before CIPA was enacted
