Ancient Egypt: Social Structure

Mind Map  What are some of the traits of a great leader?

Name some great leaders throughout history  Why were they great?

 Some leaders are great because they are decisive and act quickly.  Others may be great because they take input from people and are open to suggestions.  They can be creative and able to come up with new ideas.

Social Hierarchy

Structure of Egyptian Society  Egyptian society was structured like a pyramid. At the top were the gods, such as Ra, Osiris, and Isis.  Egyptians believed that the gods controlled the universe. Therefore, it was important to keep them happy.

Pharaohs  Pharaohs ruled Egypt for about 3,000 years  The Egyptians believed them to be gods in human form.

The people entrusted their rulers with many responsibilities  Pharaohs had to be, for the most part, capable administrators, strong military leaders, sophisticated traders, and overseers of great building projects  They taxed their subjects in grain, which was stored in case of famine.

Social Mobility  Social Mobility was not impossible.  A small number of peasants and farmers moved up the economic ladder.  Families saved money to send their sons to village schools to learn trades.  Boys who learned to read and write could become scribes, then go on to gain employment in the government.

Vizier  The pharaoh appointed a chief minister called a vizier as a supervisor.  The vizier ensured that taxes were collected.

Women  Women in ancient Egypt were ahead of their time.  They could not only rule the country, but they also had many of the same basic human rights as men.  Egyptian custom dictated that a pharaoh, who was considered a god, could not marry a mortal.  Therefore, pharaohs chose spouses from within the royal family.
