Some leaders are great because they are decisive and act quickly. Others may be great because they take input from people and are open to suggestions. They can be creative and able to come up with new ideas.

Structure of Egyptian Society Egyptian society was structured like a pyramid. At the top were the gods, such as Ra, Osiris, and Isis. Egyptians believed that the gods controlled the universe. Therefore, it was important to keep them happy.

Pharaohs Pharaohs ruled Egypt for about 3,000 years The Egyptians believed them to be gods in human form.

The people entrusted their rulers with many responsibilities Pharaohs had to be, for the most part, capable administrators, strong military leaders, sophisticated traders, and overseers of great building projects They taxed their subjects in grain, which was stored in case of famine.

Social Mobility Social Mobility was not impossible. A small number of peasants and farmers moved up the economic ladder. Families saved money to send their sons to village schools to learn trades. Boys who learned to read and write could become scribes, then go on to gain employment in the government.

Vizier The pharaoh appointed a chief minister called a vizier as a supervisor. The vizier ensured that taxes were collected.

Women Women in ancient Egypt were ahead of their time. They could not only rule the country, but they also had many of the same basic human rights as men. Egyptian custom dictated that a pharaoh, who was considered a god, could not marry a mortal. Therefore, pharaohs chose spouses from within the royal family.
