1 Varying Sentence Beginnings & Sentence Structure

2 Simple sentence Brandon R. will steam the milk in one of the stainless steel pitchers. Why is this a simple? Too many of you are relying only on these types of sentences We need … VARIATION!

3 Compound Chloe T. will fill the portafilter with espresso grounds, and Faith C. will tamp the grounds into a puck using the steel pestle. Look to combine some of your simple sentences into compound sentences. What sentences, by nature, should go together?

4 Complex Before Clark I. attaches the portafilter to the espresso machine, McClain D. will place a demitasse below the spigot. What simple sentences can be combined to make complex sentences? What sorts of relationships might these sentences have?

5 Compound-Complex After the boiling water has run through the grounds and into the demitasse, Alli D. will pour the newly-made shot of espresso into the bottom of the takeaway cup, and Findlay B. will fill the rest with steamed milk. Use comp-complex sentences for COMPLEX ideas; instructions; or to relate many ideas at once!

6 Sentence Beginnings Start with… …a noun! …an adverb! …a prep. phrase! (‘Preposition + object’) …an infinitive phrase (‘To + verb’)

7 Noun Try to limit ‘There is…” or “There are…” Lattes are fun and easy to make, once you learn how. The noun?

9 Prepositional Phrase Set off prep phrases with commas if they are more than three (3) words long! On top of the latte, sprinkle cinnamon or powdered chocolate, if you so desire. The prep phrase?

10 Infinitive Phrase To + verb + other words To make sure your latte blends well, stir as you pour in the steamed milk.
