Texas 4-H Presented by: Derrick Bruton

Topics Objectives Getting Started Get it Going Equipment Curriculum Trainings, Tutorials, & Build Instructions Contests Grant Opportunities

Project Objectives DEVELOP an understanding of basic science concepts related to robotics APPLY the processes of scientific inquiry and engineering design BUILD skills in science, engineering and technology USE the tools of technology to enhance their learning EXPLORE related careers in these fields APPLY the skills and knowledge they are developing to new challenges.

Getting Started There is no “right place” to start a robotics program Start with the first available resource A volunteer Youth interest Robotics equipment Funding Location

Getting Started Start small Continue to grow as you gain experience and resources Teach project skills Don’t focus solely on contest preparation Understand that you do not have to be an engineer to lead robotics

Getting Started Recruit a team of leaders (youth and adult) Robotics is now a project selection on Connect Determine ages/stages of members Determine interests and group’s direction Explore and match opportunities Raise funds Purchase kits, supplies, and curriculum Attend training(s) Set goals with participants

Get it Going Secure meeting place Develop a schedule Implement a progressive plan with achievable benchmarks Establish an environment of experiential learning Allow failures, but foster problem-solving Celebrate successes Cover SET abilities along the way

Get it Going - SET Abilities Predict Hypothesize Evaluate State a Problem Research Problem Test Problem Solve Design Solutions Measure Collect Data Draw/Design Build/Construct Use Tools Observe Communicate Organize Infer Question Plan Investigation Summarize/Relate Invent/Implement Solutions Interpret/Analyze/Reason Categorize/Order/Classify Model/Graph/Use Numbers Troubleshoot Redesign Optimize Collaborate Compare Definitions of SET abilities: https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/4hsciencehttps://texas4-h.tamu.edu/4hscience

Robot Platforms Defined as a brand or type of robot kit The one you choose depends on member’s age, needs, skills, contest type, and abilities Examples: Lego VEX Various models available from both platforms Texas 4-H will use Lego Mindstorm brand kits for our contests No product endorsements implied or intended.

Lego WeDo Starter set that is ideal for Clover Kids $130/kit; Software sold separately (combo pack $218) Construction set comes with printed building instructions for 12 models and contains more than 150 elements including a motor, tilt sensor, motion sensor, and LEGO USB Hub.

Lego Mindstorm EV3 Core Set

$350/kit Education software sold separately ($100) Recommended for all age divisions Recommend 1:3 ratio of kit to kid The kit includes: – Three interactive servo motors – Built-in rotation sensor and ultrasonic sensor – Color/light sensor, gyro sensor and two touch sensors – Ball wheel – LEGO Technic building bricks for creating a vast variety of models

User-Friendly Software This may look complicated at first, but it’s really quite simple. No computer programming language coding, just drag-and-drop blocks with a few variable settings.

Education vs. Home Edition Software Education (recommended) $100 single-user license Must be ordered, then downloaded Includes sample build instructions for education kit Home Free download Includes sample build instructions for home kit Lacks two sensor blocks, but can be downloaded

Apps Lego Commander – programming via Bluetooth connection Ideas4lego – mechanism designs Projects4lego –project designs Instructables – build instructions and tutorials (search for EV3 or Mindstorm)

Building Blocks – Junk Drawer Robotics Give Robots a Hand Explore the design and function of robotic arms, hands and grippers and build a robotic arm that really moves! Robots on the Move Design and build machines that roll, slide, draw or move underwater and explore robot mobility - movement, power transfer and locomotion. Mechatronics It’s all about the connection between the mechanical and electronic elements of robots, and you will explore sensors, write programs, build circuits and design your own robot.
