Forces and Motion
2
Motion
3
Definition An event that involves the change in position or location of something.
4
Motion is Relative Relative- Motion is described compared to a reference point
5
Examples of Motion
6
Speed
7
Definition Speed is a comparison of time and distance. D ST
8
Speed S = D / T – Cover the “S” in your speed triangle D = S x T – Cover the “D” in your speed triangle T = D / S – Cover the “T” in your speed triangle
9
Types of Speed Average speed- An average of different speeds traveled over a certain amount of time. Constant Speed- When an object travels at the same speed at all points during it’s motion.
10
Speed Speed is always written in terms of units of distance, divided by units of time. Examples: Miles/Hours Feet/Second Kilometers/Hour
11
Velocity
12
Definition Velocity is a combination of speed AND direction.
13
Examples of Velocity
14
Acceleration
15
Definition A change in velocity – Speeding up Positive acceleration – Slowing down Negative acceleration Deceleration – Changing direction
16
Formula for Acceleration (Final velocity – Initial velocity) Time = Acceleration
17
Examples of Acceleration A skater increases her velocity from 2.0 m/s to 10.0 m/s in 3.0 seconds. What is the skater’s acceleration?
18
