Motion of Objects Day 1 Comprehensive Science 1 Periods 1, 2, 4, 5

Bell Ringer Essential Question Describe what it means for an object to be in motion.

Data Binders: Beginning unit rating Please Hand out Data Binders! 1. Copy down learning goals 2. Rate your understanding of the goals 3. Return your data binder when finished.

Learning Goals: I can differentiate between average speed, instantaneous speed, and constant speed I can differentiate between average speed, instantaneous speed, and constant speed I can identify changes in speed as positive or negative acceleration I can identify changes in speed as positive or negative acceleration I can evaluate the motion of an object using evidence from scientific investigations I can evaluate the motion of an object using evidence from scientific investigations I can create original graphs from recorded distance and time. I can create original graphs from recorded distance and time. I can interpret distance vs. time graphs to describe an objects motion. I can interpret distance vs. time graphs to describe an objects motion.

Bell Ringer Answer.

Motion of Objects Vocabulary 1. motion -The state in which the distance between two objects is changing 2. speed – The distance an object travels during a certain unit of time 3. velocity – Speed in a given direction 4. distance – The length of the path between two points 5. displacement - moving something from one position to another 6. acceleration – The rate at which velocity changes 7. momentum - the amount of motion occurring in something that is moving

Motion of Objects Vocabulary 8. constant speed – when the speed of an object remains at the same velocity 9. reference point – A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion 10. negative acceleration – When an object is slowing down, or a decrease in the velocity of an object 11. positive acceleration – When an object is speeding up, or an increase in the velocity of an object 12. average speed – The overall rate of speed at which an object moves 13. instantaneous speed – The speed of an object at one instant of time 14. inertia – an object’s resistance to change it’s motion

Introduction What is Motion? Work in your groups to answer the questions on the worksheet.

Mini Mystery In Hot Water Page 65 Why does Danielle think the Charlie doesn’t really work at the hot springs pool? What evidence is she analyzing that makes her question his presence there?
