Point of View The Bias, Perspective, or Position of a source of information (document, source, article, story to better evaluate the accuracy and usefulness of the information. By determining point of view, students will be able to identify inherent biases or limitations. Presented at Saving T.I.M.E. ~ 5 July 2008 Kathleen M C Carron Nancy Watson

It was six men of Indostan To learning much inclined, Who went to see the Elephant (Though all of them were blind), That each by observation Might satisfy his mind
4
The First approached the Elephant, And happening to fall Against his broad and sturdy side, At once began to bawl: “God bless me! but the Elephant Is very like a wall!”
5
The Second, feeling of the tusk, Cried, “Ho! what have we here So very round and smooth and sharp? To me ’tis mighty clear This wonder of an Elephant Is very like a spear!”
6
The Third approached the animal, And happening to take The squirming trunk within his hands, Thus boldly up and spake: “I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant Is very like a snake!”
7
The Fourth reached out an eager hand, And felt about the knee. “What most this wondrous beast is like Is mighty plain,” quoth he; “ ‘Tis clear enough the Elephant Is very like a tree!”
8
The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear, Said: “E’en the blindest man Can tell what this resembles most; Deny the fact who can This marvel of an Elephant Is very like a fan!”
9
The Sixth no sooner had begun About the beast to grope, Than, seizing on the swinging tail That fell within his scope, “I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant Is very like a rope!”
10
And so these men of Indostan Disputed loud and long, Each in his own opinion Exceeding stiff and strong, Though each was partly in the right, And all were in the wrong! Moral: So oft in theologic wars, The disputants, I ween, Rail on in utter ignorance Of what each other mean, And prate about an Elephant Not one of them has seen!

SITUATION DESCRIPTION: The annual Lincoln Trojans versus Chiles Timberwolves football game was played Friday night. Due to family commitments I was unable to attend the game. The game was decided when Tom Brown caught a touchdown pass on the last play of the 4th quarter giving Lincoln a 14-10 victory. Monday morning when I arrived at school "everyone" was talking about the "catch" and the victory. What I want to know is what REALLY happened and just how great of a play this catch actually was. Throughout the day I spoke to the following people in an attempt to obtain the truth. As I review each source I must constantly ask myself "what is the validity of each person ’ s comment and what is his or her particular expertise in the area of high school football. Let’s use the SOAPS acronym to analyze the point of view of excerpts from some local reports (documents). The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about the importance of determining point of view.
