You Have a Choice in Education! February 2016

What is the Ohio Ed Choice Scholarship Program? The Ohio Ed Choice Scholarship was created to provide students from underperforming public schools an opportunity to attend a private school. For the 2016-2017 school year, this is a $6,000 scholarship for grades 9-12 and a $4,650 scholarship for grades K-8. A family can choose to use this scholarship to attend Central Catholic High School or any other Catholic high school in our area.

Which public schools qualify for Ed Choice? (Subject to change) ArlingtonMcKinley Chase STEMOakdale East BroadwayOld Orchard Fulton/Kobacker at RobinsonPickett GarfieldReynolds GlenwoodRiverside Jesup W. Scott High SchoolRobinson Jones LeadershipRosa Parks KeyserSherman LeveretteSpring MarshallWoodward High School

How do I know if I qualify? Does your child attend one of the schools listed on the previous slide? Then your child is likely qualified. If not, will your child be assigned to attend one of the schools next year? Then your child is likely qualified. Does your child currently attend a charter school and their assigned school was on the list? Then your child is likely qualified. Remember that it is the state who ultimately determines eligibility but our staff can help you determine if you are likely qualified, including looking up your assigned school.

Can my scholarship be renewed? Yes, once the student has the scholarship, it can be renewed each year as long as the student: Does not move to another public school district, Takes all required state achievement tests, AND Does not have more than 20 unexcused absences for the year For those of you with children in younger grades, this means you can enroll your child now in a Catholic elementary school, and the scholarship will follow your child all the way through to high school graduation!

How much will it cost for my child to attend CCHS? The scholarship covers $6,000 of tuition for the 2016-2017 school year, so there are some costs. All parents pay an annual registration fee. For next year it is $300 if paid within 2 weeks of receiving the acceptance letter. All parents also pay an annual $1,200 composite fee. This covers items such as athletic participation fees, home admission to athletic events, yearbook, parking permit, graduation fees, technology fees, internet access at school, art fees, and books.

For 2016-2017, our tuition remains $7,950. Since the scholarship is $6,000, depending on your income, you could also be responsible for the remaining $1,950 that is not covered by the scholarship. If your income is less than the following (based on household size), then you do NOT have to pay this portion, as long as you file the correct paperwork and are deemed qualified with the state. Household SizeGross Annual Income 1$23,600 2$32,040 3$40,320 4$48,600 5$56,880 6$65,160 7$73,460 8$81,780

Payment options We do require that families prepay tuition and fees by May 27, 2016, before the year starts, or set up a payment plan by that day. If you can not pay in full, Central Catholic offers 10 month payment plans of the composite fee and any remaining tuition. We use a company called FACTS to process the payments. Payments run from July to April each school year. There is an additional annual finance fee of $150 if you choose FACTS automatic monthly payments from a checking or savings account, or $200 if you choose to mail in your payments monthly.

How do I apply for the Ed Choice scholarship? First, the student must be accepted at the private school you choose. Once you receive an acceptance notice, you are required to fill out the state of Ohio Ed Choice Scholarship Request Form or Renewal Form and return to the school. You must also provide the child’s birth certificate and proof of your residency (such as a utility bill in your name). The state will then notify you of your eligibility for the scholarship.

Another note if you have younger children or to pass along to friends: For the 2016-2017 year, Ed Choice Expansion Scholarships are now also available to incoming kindergarteners through third grade students whose family income is less than the previously mentioned limits and reside in a TPS district– regardless of if they would be required to attend an underperforming school. You can use this Expansion scholarship at any participating Catholic elementary school!
