1 HISTORY OF THE ATOM By: Brenden, Jordan, Lindsey 8 th period

2 In 1932, James Chadwick was testing alfa particles with beryllium to get electromagnetic radiation but in the reaction, he discovered a “neutral particle” with a mass also known as a Neutron. In 1941, he wrote a MAUD report, which inspired the US government to begin serious atomic bomb research efforts. After building a successful bomb, in 1941, Chadwick’s research group discovered the mass for uranium for a nuclear detonation. In 1943 he moved to the United States to take part in the atomic bomb project. Chadwick attended the Trinity nuclear test on July 16, 1945, when the world’s first atomic bomb was detonated. JAMES CHADWICK

3 Chadwick was born in Manchester, England on October 20th, 1891. He was awarded a first-class degree in 1911, then was accepted into Rutherford as a research student Chadwick won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1935. Chadwick & Rutherford found that each element had its own atomic number and mass. OTHER INTERESTING FACTS James Chadwick, Physicist
