1. Absentees sign up for MCM project 2. Quick psychology perspective review 3. Tusko case study breakdown 4. Ways to conduct psychological research
2
Use the approaches as a guide to understanding “why we think and behave the way we do” from different angles.
3
Read the Tusko experiment and underline anything in the text that will help you identify the scientific method, QHPDC.
4
Listen to the Tusko experiment and try to identify any parts of the scientific method, QHPDC. Why Tusko, whyyyy? Why Tusko, whyyyy?
5
Question ◦ What would happen if an elephant took lsd? Hypothesis ◦ If a male elephant is given 297 milligrams of LSD, then the elephant will begin to musth. Musth or must is a periodic condition in male elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones (testosterone). ◦ IV- Amount of LSD given to Tusko ◦ DV- if Tusko begins to musth ◦ Control group- observing an elephant under the exact same conditions as Tusko, but with no LSD (IV) ◦ Experimental group- Observing Tusko under the exact same conditions as control group but WITH LSD (IV)
6
Procedure ◦ Explain for control group and experimental Data ◦ Report your findings, charts and graphs, label the trends and record any notes from the experiment. Conclusion ◦ Answer your question ◦ Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? ◦ If incorrect what could you do to change the experiment? ◦ Real life application All of these answers are given through a specific perspective of psychology
7
There is more than 1 way to skin a cat, and there’s more than 1 way to collect data! There are numerous ways to collect data, but the following research types will allow you to not COLLECT DATA, but actually CREATE DATA!
8
Test the subjects in a controlled environment where you can manipulate the situation and observe the results If a plant is exposed to sunlight, then it will grow more
9
Independent variable ◦ I CONTROL AND CHANGE this variable Dependent variable ◦ Changes DEPENDING on what I DO with the independent variable ◦ A good hypothesis will contain both the independent and dependent variables, often in an "if (IV), then (DV)" format
10
In an experiment you need to have 2 different test groups Control group ◦ This group is NOT subject to the independent variable (changing sunlight) Experimental group ◦ This group is subjected to the independent variable
11
Observing an individual or group in their natural habitat, typically with as little interference as possible Acting as a SPY, your sneaky techniques need to go unnoticed! a.k.a. the "fly on the wall" technique
12
Follows a (usually large) group of people over a long period of timetime
13
Tests groups of people from different groups (age groups, gender, socio-economic status, race, religion) Give the same experiment to different people and compare group to group data.data.
14
An extensive and in depth look at a single individual Billy in the case study you read for homework! Tusko the elephant
15
Ask a series of questions to a number of people
16
Be smart with your experiments ◦ Don’t hurt people or give them LSD unwillingly… ◦ If your subject wants to stop, STOP ◦ Results are private
