Chapter 9 Lesson 3 ACIDS, BASES, AND SALTS
2
Vocabulary Acid: substance that tastes sour and turns blue litmus paper red when dissolved in water; releases hydrogen ions Base: substance that feels slippery, tastes bitter, and turns red litmus paper blue when dissolved in water; receives hydrogen ions
3
Vocabulary Indicator: substance that shows whether an acid or base is present pH: system for measuring the strength of acids and bases Salt: what forms when a strong base reacts with a strong acid, typically made of a nonmetal and a metal
4
Acids Tastes sour Turns blue litmus paper red Releases hydrogen ions Reacts easily with other bases
5
Bases Tastes bitter Turns red litmus paper blue Receives hydrogen ions Reacts easily with other acids
6
Acid or Base? Indicators are used to determine if a substance is an acid or base A common indicator is litmus paper
7
pH Scale There are different strengths of acids and bases To measure the strength, scientists use the pH (potential of hydrogen) scale
8
Salts When a strong acid reacts with a strong base, a salt forms
9
Quiz Chapter 9 Lesson 2 Name two characteristics of acids (2 points) Name two characteristics of bases (2 points) What is a safe way to test for an acid or base? (1 points)
