1 Discipline, Crime, and Violence Data Reporting

2 Purpose and Requirements  Prepare Virginia’s Annual Discipline, Crime, and Violence Report as required by Virginia law (Code of Virginia §22.1-279.3:1)  Identify persistently dangerous schools for Virginia’s Unsafe School Choice Option Policy required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB)  Provide school safety indicators for Virginia’s School Performance Report Card

3 Purpose and Requirements  Report suspensions and expulsions of students with disabilities required by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)  Report in-school suspensions of students with disabilities required by the federal Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)

4 Purpose and Requirements  Report school safety indicators required by the federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act  Report firearms in schools required by the federal Gun Free Schools Act  Report suspensions and expulsions of students required by the federal Office of Civil Rights.

5 Use of Data  Promote school safety and student learning  Replace hunches with facts  Identify the causes of problems  Assess needs so that services can be targeted  Determine whether goals are being accomplished  Understand the impact of prevention and intervention

6 Reporting DCV Data  Incident based  Incidents resulting in suspension or expulsions and all required offenses  Incidents on school grounds 365 days a year/24 hours a day/7 days a week  Incidents on school transportation  Incidents at off-campus, school- sponsored events

7 Incident-based Reporting  Reporting system organized around events, or “incidents” A single incident: May involve one or more offenses. May involve one or more students. May result in a disciplinary outcome for each student involved.
