MATH I/E We will focus on some important or minor subjects in Math I/E. Topics such as roman numerals, problem solving, and order of operation. We will not have any I/E on Friday. If you behave well on Monday thru Wednesday, I will let your class have a free day, a day we don’t learn anything, on Thursday!

WRITING We’ll focus on the basic writing skills. Skills like how to write a good essay, the parts of a good essay, and the different kinds of essays. At the middle and end of the year, I will assign you to write a essay that will be entered into a contest. I will talk about that more at the end of the year.

HISTORY We will focus on America’s history. Like our presidents, Pennsylvania, and the United States. We will play a lot of games to learn about this stuff. We will also do a lot of activities that will help you expand your knowledge. This will probably be your favorite class.

DEAR MR. KRIEGER, I think we should switch, or rotate math and reading i/e classes every marking period. Christa can choose who she wants to be with every marking period. If you want, we can do the same with regular classes! I will discuss this with Sarah. I hope you think we should do this. If you want to do this, the marking period will end Monday. I hope you will agree!!!!!! Love, Miss Krieger P.S. If you have any questions, tell me when I get Home!!!!!!!!!!!! P.P.S. Sarah is a student!!!!!!!

MATH I/E LESSON- ROMAN NUMERALS Roman Numerals are letters that stand for numbers. People used these numbers in ancient times when people only drew straight lines. There are many different symbols of roman numerals. Seven to be exact.

MATH I/E LESSON- ROMAN NUMERALS These are the symbols of roman numerals. I = 1 V = 5 X = 10 L = 50 C = 100 D = 500 M = 1000 Here are numbers 1 – 10: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XV, X Here are numbers 11 – 20: XI, XII, XIII, VX, XV. XVI, XVII, XVIII, XVX, XX

WRITING LESSON- PARTS OF AN ESSAY There are three parts to an essay. They are the introduction, body, and conclusion. Introduction- the first paragraph of an essay Body- the paragraph(s) between the introduction and conclusion Conclusion- the last paragraph of an essay

HISTORY LESSON- UNITED STATES There are fifty states in the US. We live in Pennsylvania. The largest state is Alaska, and the smallest is Rhode Island. The most recent added state was Hawaii in 1959. Thirteen of the states were originally part of the thirteen colonies. The oldest state is Virginia. It was the first of the thirteen colonies.

MATH I/E LESSON- REVIEW Symbols I = ? V = ? X = ? Numerals III = ? VII = ? XVI = ?

MATH I/E LESSON- TRICKS TO REMEMBER Some ways you can remember what some symbol means is, The “I” looks like a 1. The “X” has two lines and five times two equals 10. The “C” looks like a zero. If you put two of them together, you get two zeros and you’ll just have to remember the one goes before the zeros. So you get 100. When you are trying to figure out what the roman numeral’s number is, you should just add up all the symbols together. Ex. XVI, 10 + 5 + 1 = 16, XVI = 16 However, that doesn’t work when you are finding a numeral that ends with four in standard form. You subtract the lowest symbol, which is usually “I”, from “V”, or 5. Then you add the other symbols to it. Ex. IV, 5-1=4, IV=4; XIV, 5-1=4+10=14, XIV=14

WRITING LESSON- INTRODUCTION Introduction- first paragraph of an essay, the “summary” paragraph The introduction paragraph tells you what your story is going to be about. I call it the summary paragraph. You write down the main idea of your essay. You also write the topics of each of your paragraphs.

WRITING LESSON- INTRODUCTION EXAMPLE Baseball (Topic sentence or main idea) How much do you know about baseball? (Paragraph main ideas) There is a lot of history in baseball. Baseball is a fun and energetic sport. There are a lot of strategies to baseball. I listed my main idea of the essay, and my three paragraph main ideas.

HISTORY LESSON- THIRTEEN COLONIES Before we had our United States, we had our Thirteen Colonies. It was mostly the East side of what is now the US. Those colonies, or states, were New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Virginia was the first of the thirteen colonies.

HISTORY THIRTEEN COLONIES QUESTIONS 1.Do we live in one of the thirteen colonies Yes 2. True or false? Massachusetts was the first colony. False 3Where are most of the colonies located in what is now the US? East
