12 2001-10-24Workshop on standards in action12 Challenges (I) l avoid consequences on the technical UML application schema l a data interface structured as simple as possible is of fundamental importance for the acceptance of ALKIS by potential users l NAS should avoid unnecessary complexity not to build up an unnecessary barrier for the use of geographic data in Germany

13 2001-10-24Workshop on standards in action13 Challenges (II) l NAS should be based on international accepted basic standards as far as possible l there is the urgent need to examine the encoding rules at concrete instances before establishing the NAS l the requests for an update mechanism have to be taken into account

14 2001-10-24Workshop on standards in action14 ISO 19118: Current Situation Problems are identified by the application of ISO 19118 XML encoding rules within the specification of NAS: –still a draft standard –parallel development at OGC - GML Both developments are not coordinated (first attemps are recognized, but a complete harmonization is probably not expectable)  GML and ISO 19118 XML Encoding Rules are not compatible –No standardized XML-schemas are available for the ISO 19100 basic schemas  Loss of interoperability

15 2001-10-24Workshop on standards in action15 GML: Current Situation There are also problems with GML: l no exactly defined references to ISO 19100 draft standards l no update mechanism l topology is not supported by GML 2.0 l no support of splines and arcs

16 2001-10-24Workshop on standards in action16 Strategy of Germany (I) l use of ISO 19118 Level 1 in ALKIS  ISO 19118 compliant documentation of „NAS Encoding Rules“, which maps the conceptual ALKIS data model to a GML-2.0 application schema (in future GML 3.0)  NAS Encoding Rules are defined as simple as possible and largely compliant to ISO 19118 XML Encoding Rules l support the beginning harmonization between ISO 19118 XML Encoding Rules and GML  Objective: ISO 19118 Level 2 conformity for ALKIS-NAS
