Coastal Ocean Processes: Homework 1.Investigate what happens if the western side is extended to include a deep (H=1000m) SCS basin: (a) extend as shown; (b) rerun for 28days; (c) make sure it is steady; (d) plot the last day (the steady solution); (e) discuss using the ideas you have learned in class; 2.Repeat “1” to investigate what happens if the wind is time dependent: oscillating with a period of 5 and 10 days try both; 3.Go back to the original domain (without SCS; see slide#2), remove Taiwan to make the domain simple rectangular channel. Make the y-extent 2000 km instead of 450km. Put a seamount instead of Ridge in the center of the southern half of the channel in “Taiwan Strait”: with x_center the same as for the ridge, but y_center = 500km. Note that you need to adjust the “H”. Study and discuss the wave behind the seamount. Sponge 2000 km 60 km H = 10 m Wind Ridge 450 km H = 85 m Sverdrup Flow 500 km ? Linearly increase H from shelf to H = 1000 m; put sponge.
