Molecular Compounds SNC2DI
2
Terms to Know A covalent bond is formed when elements share electrons to make a bond. A molecular compound is formed from covalent bonding atoms Typically form between two non- metals
3
H How Covalent Bonds Form C HHH
4
Formulas for Molecular Compounds 1.Use the exact same rules for ionic compounds. 2.If the compound is already named, then all you need to do is look at the prefixes and write the compound accordingly. C Cl 41 CCl 4
5
Examples: Carbon Dioxide CO 2 Tertraphosphorus dichloride P 4 Cl 2
6
Naming Molecular Compounds Change ending of second non-metal to “ide” Use prefixes to identify the number of atoms –mono, di, tri, tetra, penta. –Don’t use mono for the first non-metal CCl 4 carbon tetrachloride
7
More Examples nitrogen monoxideNO silicon dioxideSiO 2 carbon monoxideCO sulfur trioxideSO 3 phosphorus pentabromide PBr 5 dinitrogen trioxideN2O3N2O3
