Do Now! What is surface water? Give some examples of where it is located.

Agenda:  Do Now  Test Analysis  Finish notes- Surface Water & groundwater  Tracking Pollution: A Hazardous Whodunit **Bring your textbook tomorrow!

Surface Water: http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/animation_w atercycle_en.html http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/animation_w atercycle_en.html Surface water: fresh water on Earth’s surface Lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands River system:a network of streams that flow into larger rivers Provide drinking water, transportation, food Most major cities were built by surface water

Surface Water: Watershed: the area of land that is drained by a river Pollution anywhere in the watershed can affect the entire river system

Groundwater  Groundwater: Water beneath the Earth’s surface- in sediment and rock formations  Water drains through soil and porous rock until it reaches saturated and impermeable ground, where it collects  The level of the saturated ground: water table  Water table rises and falls. Flows toward low points  Aquifer: An underground formation that contains groundwater; major source of drinking water

Groundwater  Porosity: the percentage of a rock that has spaces in it  Permeability: The ability of rock or soil to allow water to flow through it  Most aquifers form in permeable materials  Recharge zone: The area of the surface from which water drains to the aquifer  Can take a long time to recharge an aquifer!  Buildings/parking lots are impermeable and can reduce the size of the recharge zone.

Wells  Wells: holes dug deep enough to reach an aquifer.  More reliable than surface water because the water has been filtered as it moves through soil and rock.  When water table drops, well might dry out

Lab:  Tracking pollution: A Hazardous Whodunit
