3
Photosynthesis n Photosynthesis is essential to understanding why all life on earth depends upon the existence of plants.
4
The Process of Photosynthesis n Photo means light and synthesis means putting together. n During photosynthesis minerals and water are combined with carbon dioxide from the air.
5
How Does Photosynthesis Help us? n During photosynthesis oxygen is released into the air. n When we breath air, we take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. n Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
6
How do Plants Produce Their own Food? n Most plants can produce all their own food because they contain chlorophyll. n Chlorophyll is a substance that makes the leaves of most plants green. n Green plants use chlorophyll to capture sunlight. n The they use the energy from sunlight to make food.
7
Cycle of Nature n Green plants use the sun’s energy to change water, minerals and carbon dioxide into food and oxygen. n Oxygen is breathed by animals. n Food helps the plants grow. n Plants become food for the animals. n When plants and animals die they decay and return to the soil.
8
n There would be no food for plant eating animals, so they would die. n There would be no food for the meat eating animals. n There would be no oxygen to breath. n The cycle of nature would be broken- lifeless planet. If there were no plants...
9
Food Energy n People get energy from plants in the form of food. n Food energy is stored in almost every part of a plant. n Food energy is the fuel that makes your body work.
10
Plants and People n Plants are part of our lives in many ways. n When we are hungry we eat plants for food. n Every time we take a breath we use oxygen that was released by green plants. n It is a cycle of give and take, borrow and return.
