5 Levels of Organization
A single cell Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organism
3
Tissues A tissue is a group of similar cells that perform the same function. There are 4 basic types of tissue in the human body Muscle Connective Nerve Epithelial
4
Muscle Tissue The only kind of tissue in your body that has the ability to contract or shorten Photo in public domain:
5
Muscle Tissue Three types of muscle tissue have different jobs
Pulls on bones allowing you to move (skeletal) Lines the walls of structures in your body and does things like move food through your digestive track (smooth) Pumps blood (cardiac)
6
Connective Tissue Provides support for your body and connects all its parts Includes: Tendons, cartilage and ligaments Bones Blood Fat Photos in public domain
7
Nerve Tissue Carries messages back and forth between the brain and spinal cord and every other part of your body Messages can move at up to 100 meters per second (about 1/3 the speed of sound) Photo from BrainMaps.org The Brain contains about 1 trillion neurons – the cells that make up nerve tissue.
8
Epithelial Tissue Forms a protective surface on the outside of your body Lines the cavities of the mouth, throat, ears, stomach and other body parts. Forms the covering or lining of all internal and external body surfaces
9
Functions of Epithelial Tissue
Protection Sensation Secretion Absorption Excretion Diffusion Cleaning Reduces Friction
