1 Thursday, Aug. 13 Welcome back! Bellringer: Write the lead you found in your news reading last night. Briefly describe why you believe it was effective (3 sentences minimum). Reminder: First Amendment test next Friday, Aug. 21!

2 Need to know … The First Amendment: addition to the U.S. Constitution that provides a right to free speech and a free press Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

7 How to prioritize info Did you prioritize WHERE? “The local school district budget will have to be cut only $450,000 instead of $1.2 million because of an unexpected grant from the state, district school officials announced Monday.”

8 How to prioritize info Did you prioritize WHEN? “Monday, district school officials said preliminary budget cuts for the school year have been reduced from $1.2 million to $450,000 because of an unanticipated grant from the state.”

9 How to prioritize info Did you prioritize WHY/HOW? “Because of an unanticipated grant from the state, preliminary budget cuts for the school year have been reduced from $1.2 million to $450,000, according to district school officials.”

10 How to prioritize info Consider news values when deciding how to write your lead Can you rank your 5W/1H by order of importance? Think about how the reader would rank them, not your personal preference

12 Writing a lead Write a lead with this info: Who: Human Relations Committee, Youth Advisory Board, IMPACT Team In a summary lead, you can combine these groups: “Youth organizations” What: Bring back program When: May 2-6 Where: Overland Why: Positive feedback How: “Choices for Youth” program

13 Types of leads Indirect lead: Sets the scene or introduces a character before letting the reader know the topic of a story Delayed lead: Also known as “buried lead”

17 Homework Fill out the 5W/1H for your TC story. Read the lead you wrote for your TC story last week. Would you say it is a direct or indirect lead? Why? Write a new lead for your story based on what you’ve learned and practiced today.
