Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo DO NOW: Answer in your notes. 1.When do we use measurement? Measurement is finding a value (number) that shows the size or amount of something. Accuracy is how close a measured value is to the actual (true) value. Precision is how close the measured values are to each other. 2. In the figures below, which do you think has a more accurate and precise measurement? Why? AB C High PrecisionHigh Accuracy High Accuracy High Precision

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo What do we Measure? What tools? Units used? Length- metric ruler, meter Mass- triple beam balance, grams Volume- graduated cylinder, ml, cm3 Temperature- thermometer, Celsius, or centigrade (degrees) Time- clock, seconds

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo A Metric Ruler 1 (cm) centimeter = 10 (mm) Millimeters 1 Inch = 25.4 (mm)

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Prefixes 1/100 1/1000 kilo 1000 1 1/1000 (1) 1/100 meters

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo 1cm= 10mm (micrometer, millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer) smallest 2.4 cm= 24mm 2.5cm= 25mm biggest 1mm= 1000um (micrometer)- used in measuring the size of a cell. Order of increasing size

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo 1 cm = 10 mm 9.0 cm= 90mm

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo Volume reading is taken at the bottom or lower miniscus (curved surface) HOW DO YOU READ THE VOLUME OF A LIQUID?

Topic: Scientific Measurement Date: Sept 15, 2014 Aim: How do I measure mass, length, volume of liquids, and temperature with accuracy and precision? Mrs. Norma D. Cullo Measuring Mass or Weight 300+70+3.5=373.5 g
