COMPETENCY ONE Identify as a professional social worker and conduct oneself accordingly

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.1 Advocate for client access to the services of social work. Example: When a client is in need, I will exhaust all resources to help give them what they need, i.e. shelter, food, clothing.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.2 Practice personal reflection and self-correction to assure continual professional development. Example: Take a look at how I am practicing social work and the methods I am using and how effective I am. Correct what is not working continue becoming a better and more effective social worker.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.3 Attend to professional roles and boundaries Example: Always remember I am the social worker and not to cross the line of social worker-client relationships into a personal relationship.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.4 Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and communication Example: Always maintain the standards of my position as a social worker in the way I act towards clients, clothing I wear/hairstyle (no sweat pants and bedhead), and in the way I interact with clients verbally and nonverbally.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.5 Engage in career long learning. Example: Never stop learning the profession. Attend NASW meetings, seminars, and meetings. Conduct research and interact with other professionals about our practices.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 1.6 Use supervision and consultation Example: Utilize the knowledge and advice of supervisors. If I am unsure the direction to take with a clients needs, ask my supervisor their opinion or speak with a fellow social worker for their perspective.
