5 Sociocultural Intervention  People can identify goals by choosing to: Accommodate to the majority structure (share in social rewards) Reject the majority structure and build separate majority institutions Strike a compromise

6 Biculturalism  Model by DeAnda et al.  People can be socialized into 2 cultures simultaneously  Six factors that can facilitate/impede biculturalism Areas of interface between 2 (doorways) Major points of conflict between 2 and negative consequences for client Translators, mediators – available to offer guidelines – or arrange Arrange for increased corrective feedback for client in the environment Work to expand client’s repertoire of problem solving skills – focusing on those that are least context bound – as well as developing context specific ones Educate people of majority culture about characteristics, values and needs of minority cultures - advocate

7 Cultural Competence Guidelines for social work in a multicultural society Honor each person’s value, dignity, and right to self-determination Use effective communication, listening, empathy, and negotiating skills Avoid attacking others and their views as a way of validating one’s own position Recognize the pervasiveness of oppression in society, and encourage examination of the residues of racism, sexism, and homophobia on both individual and organization levels Maintain the interest and welfare of clients as the priority (Van Soest)

8 Recognize general principles across cultures  Relationship – warmth, genuineness, empathy  Shared world view- social worker must treat with respect  Expectation of positive outcome  Sensitivity/flexibility in intervention choices
