The project The goal is to learn from the analysis of a real-world logistics problem for which you generate solutions Groups of 2 – 3 people (organise yourself, please) Choice of 2 subjects: -City logistics problem -Retail logistics problem Find yourself a real-world problem that you -Analyse for the size and complexity of the problem -Optimise for 1 or 2 performance indicators

3. The problem Should exist in the real world Take a city that you know, a chain that you have worked at, etc, etc Should have lots of data available -Quantitative and qualitative -Make up ’reasonable estimates’ of missing data. Come up with problems, and write 1 A4 on why it is interesting, and what data sources you can find. Send this to Sebastiaan Meijer to get a go!

4. The analysis Context, size, volumes, variations, etc Pay attention to the technical, human, economic and environmental aspects. Use GIS, map analysis, transport models, etc Use whatever you have learned so far, don’t limit yourself! The goal: to make the problem and potential directions for solutions as precise as possible. 8 – 12 pages in the report

5. The solutions Use heuristics and good reasoning to derive a few options. Don’t explore 10 alternatives. 2 – 3 is enough Use a simple simulation in (a part of) the evaluation of the value of different solutions. Think of different performance indicators: -Money -CO2 -Noise -Service levels Around 8 – 12 pages in the report

6. The report Make sure that you include data Somebody who is not familiar with the problem shall be able to understand your conclusions. A good report: -Is precise and analytical -Treats logistics as more than trucks that move -Has feasible solutions -Has a waterproof foundation under the evaluation of alternatives -Discusses what has not been analysed Hand it in via email before 16/12 kl 24.00 Presentation on 18/12
