Introduction Now that you have learned about the moon’s relationship with Earth and humankind’s first trip to the moon, we are going to become astronauts for a time. Many people know what an astronaut is, but most people have no idea how someone becomes an astronaut. There is a great deal of hard work involved in this process and this project will help you understand all that it requires.

Introduction (continued) In this assignment you will investigate how an astronaut trains and lives in space and you will present the information in a slideshow for a younger class.

Task We have been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop an introduction to astronauts for a 2 nd Grade class. You will work in groups of four to investigate the training an astronaut endures and what they experience in space, record this information in your journal, and create a PowerPoint slideshow for a 2 nd Grade class.

Process Some questions you should be able to answer in your slideshow: What sort of training do astronauts go through? What types of food can they eat in space? What is the Space Shuttle? What is living in zero gravity like?

Evaluation

Conclusion Congratulations! Your first mission with NASA has been a success. During your study, you learned a great deal about what it takes to be an astronaut, how they survive in space and taught a younger class about the life of an astronaut. NASA is always on the lookout for new astronauts, so keep studying and soon you could be up there looking down on us.

Teacher’s Page For 4 th Grade: Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Science & Technology 3.4.4.D: Describe the composition and structure of the universe and the earth’s place in it. Recognize earth’s place in the solar system. Explain and illustrate the causes of seasonal changes. Identify planets in our solar system and their general characteristics. Describe the solar system motions and use them to explain time (e.g. days, seasons), major lunar phases and eclipses.
