3. Who We Are VHIO (formerly San Francisco Hepatitis B Collaborative) is a group of volunteers that interpret for UCSF Hepatitis B clinics. To eliminate language barriers in health care settings by providingtrained volunteer interpreters to health care organizations and facilities that serve the under-served, limited English proficient (LEP) communities in the Bay Area. 8. What is Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is a disease of the liver and is caused by thehepatitis B virus (HBV) ¼ hepatitis B carriers develop liver cancer 50% are asymptomatic

9. Health Disparities Greatest health disparity between Caucasian Americans and API Americans is liver cancer, 80% of which is due to chronic hepatitis B infection Of the 1.3 – 1.5 million known hepatitis B carriers in the US, APIs consist of more than half of that.

10. Hepatitis B and our Community In our SF clinics, about 1 in 10 patients are positive for hepatitis B SF Hep B Free: Campaign to be the first city in the US to test & vaccinate all Asian Pacific Islanders for hepatitis B

11. Hepatitis B Clinics  Mt. Zion Medical Center and Chinatown Public Health Center (CPHC)  When: First and second Saturdays of each month, respectively  Provides hepatitis B screenings and vaccinations at very low cost  Languages needed: Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese What we do at clinic  Serve as interpreters between patients and healthcare providers  Assist patients with filling out intake forms  Put together new patient files

12. CACCC An organization devoted to end of life care issues in the Chinese community Languages: Fluent Cantonese or Mandarin What we do:  Simultaneous interpretation at outreach events and meetings  In Language community outreach When/where:  As requested, San Jose, San Francisco, etc

Alzheimer’s Service of the East Bay  About ASEB: - provides services and support to individuals with dementia and their families - educates and informs the public about dementia care issues  Website: www.aseb.org  Language: - basic Mandarin  When & Where: - flexible schedule during M-F 9am-4pm in Berkeley  What We Do: - regular volunteers: accompany Mandarin speaking participants - home visit interpreters

14. Asian Health Services  A community health center in Oakland Chinatown  primary care regardless of ability to pay  fluent in English and 9 Asian languages: Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Korean, Khmer (Cambodian), Mien, Mongolian, Tagalog and Lao. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Languages: Fluent Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese What We PLAN to Do: - Certified interpreters for Hepatitis B (Fall 2010) - Interpretation training in Decal Class (Spring 2011) - Certified interpreters for off-site specialist referrals When & Where: By request, Oakland

15. Labor Coach What we do:  Labor Delivery and Support  Advocacy  Interpretation Populations Served:  Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin)  Vietnamese  Korean  Laotian  Mien  Cambodian

16. Strong proficiency in English and at least one Asian language Mature and reliable Have interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively with patients and hospital staff.
