Zebra Mussels Discovered in North America in 1988. Marine biologists believe it arrived by transatlantic ship-an undetected stowaway in ballast water that was discharged, mussel larvae and all, into Lake St. Clair, between Lakes Huron and Erie. Since then, the prolific creature has spread rapidly throughout lakes and waterways of the eastern United States and Canada, from the Great Lakes through the Mississippi River drainage. It remains unchecked by predators or parasites.
