Lesson 2-3 Simplifying Variable Expressions P.74

2-3 p.74 COMBINING LIKE TERMS Term—a number or the product of a number and variable. Example: 4, 7, 8x, -3a Constant—a number with no variable. Example: 5, -12, 9 Coefficient—a number that is multiplied by a variable. Example: 6r (6 is the coefficient) -5d (-5 is the coefficient)

Combining Like Terms In an expression like 5a + 2a, we can combine the terms that are alike to simplify. For example, 5a + 2a can be simplified to 7a. 5a + 2a = 7a Another example is 5r + 7r + 3r. Combine the r’s to get 15r. 5r + 7r + 3r = 15r Yet another example is 5m – 2m + m. Combine all the m’s to get 4m. 5m – 2m + 1m = 4m
