8. Combining Like Terms In an expression like 5a + 2a, we can combine the terms that are alike to simplify. For example, 5a + 2a can be simplified to 7a. 5a + 2a = 7a Another example is 5r + 7r + 3r. Combine the r’s to get 15r. 5r + 7r + 3r = 15r Yet another example is 5m – 2m + m. Combine all the m’s to get 4m. 5m – 2m + 1m = 4m
