Network Support for Video 1

QOS – It’s all about the quality Initially only on the WAN links Now marked at the edge (current best practice) –Video is everywhere – QOS needs to be too –Takes marking pressure off routers –Config on every switch –Get it right to start with – have a comprehensive plan –S/W to manage switch configs is a must –Up to date hardware is needed to support the latest queuing features –Homogenous switch fleet is also vital – not just by brand but by model type 2

QOS – other peoples networks Watch your ISPs, they are all different –Aarnet honour your diffserv settings –Telstra and Optus support 6 TOS classes Don’t assume QOS is honoured – check –Don’t all support diffserv –Can be a separate service to pay for –Doesn’t always work (not even on AARNet) –VPN tunnels cause extra problems depending on the type, they may encapsulate the QOS settings so they can’t be seen. 3

Our Model Based on Cisco Media net settings 8 classes not 12 to start with (DSCP) Two classes for different video types – could expand to more later –Video Room –Interactive (jabber, moodle) ACLs mark based on a mix of port numbers (SIP, H.323, H245 etc) and IP addresses, depending on the application. 4

Monitoring It’s important – beware the set and forget IPSLA – ManageEngine Tool –Dedicated router TTS reported 5

Future Challenges Wireless Monitoring Keeping up with new devices and service delivery models eg –new video endpoints that also act like a tablet –In room interaction via wireless On going review process Tafe integration 7
