Summary Notes/Practice Please use this PowerPoint to complete the notes in your spiral. You will take a six question practice quiz at the end (self-corrected). Then you will complete this week’s vocabulary flashcards.

Name It = identify the article, movie, book, etc. Verb It = choose word to tell about the article

Some other verbs (higher level) might include: clarifies, illustrates, supports, defends, demonstrates…

Give the Big Picture = *The overall GREEN *Central idea (main idea) *All other ideas fit under this umbrella

List of key ideas: (often ___yellows________, sometimes ____reds________, almost never __pinks______)

Example: Reptiles, a New True Book, by Lois Ballard explains why many kinds of snakes are helpful. One kind of snake, called a milk snake, helps farmers because it eats the mice and rats that might eat the farmer’s grain. A second helpful snake is the king snake, which eats other kinds of snakes that might harm humans. List of Key Ideas: (put usually under the BIG PICTURE) column * Milk snake (yellow) *eats mice/helps farmers (red) * King snake (yellow) * eats snakes/could hurt humans (red) --- These above are a lot like the “yellows” and the “reds”

Name It ”Work and Play” Chapter in book --- Ancient Egypt Verb It tells Give Big Picture Everyday life of Egyptians 3000 years ago Example: “Work and Play,” a chapter in Ancient Egypt, tells about the everyday life of Egyptians who lived 3000 years ago. It gives a list of some of the jobs men had. They had jobs like painting, carving stone, and building furniture. They were paid with food and clothes instead of money. It also gives a list of activities that people enjoyed when they did not work. Some people danced, wrestled, or played board games. List of Key Ideas: Men’s jobs – painting, carving, building Payment = clothes/food Activities – dance, wrestling, board games

Example One: “Africa Dream” The story, “Africa Dream” by Eloise Greenfield tells about a girl who returns to Africa and visits many places. She goes to the marketplace in Ancient Africa and she sees pearls and perfume. She also rides on a donkey through crowds of people. She travels to a village in Africa where she danced and sang.

Example Two: “Chapter Five” “Chapter Five” my Life Science book explains how a simple telegraph works. A simple telegraph has a key to send the message, a dry cell for electricity, and a sounder to receive the message. All of the parts of a telegraph are connected by wire. The circuit, however, is almost open. When someone pushes down on the key, the circuit is closed. A current then flows form the dry cell to the key in the sounder.
