What will your 6 th grade day look like?

Before School (subject to change) Students may enter the building and go to the cafeteria at 8:30am Students should not be dropped off before 8:00am At 8:50am students are dismissed to their lockers to unpack backpacks and get materials for class Tardy bell rings at 9:00am

Lockers Each student is assigned an individual locker and lockers need to have locks on at all times Combination locks are purchased during our orientation nights before school starts, purchases are valid for all three years Locker cleanouts available through counselor

During the Day… Four minute passing period 6 th grade classes are all downstairs 6 th grade office centrally located – 6 th grade Principal, Counselor and Secretary Separate lunch for only 6 th graders

Lunch Separate 6 th grade Lunch More choices – Klein Lines and Snack Bar Menus available online and also on monitors in the cafeteria New pin #’s when you move to 6 th grade Deposit money using Net Cash Machine, online or by sending a check

End of the day… Bell rings at 3:55pm (subject to change) Car-riders dismissed out the front of the building Walkers/Bike Riders dismissed out the back of the building Bus riders report to the cafeteria to their assigned table according to their bus number *Transportation will post bus numbers and routes online in early August

Electives 6 th grade students choose one Art* Theater Arts* Band* Choir* Orchestra* *Requires fees and/or instrument rental Power Math & Power Reading Required based on Math & Reading STAAR results PATH – Next Step

Physical Education Students are required to take two years at the intermediate level Students will dress out in their PE uniform daily and are encouraged to bring it home on the weekends to be washed Students will be assigned a separate locker in the locker room for their PE clothes

Bulldog Period Intervention Period for all students Students who are pulled for intervention receive specialized instruction for their area of need Students who are not pulled for intervention use the time to read, study or work on homework Character Building Grade Repair

What are the differences between Regulars, Pre-AP and GT?

Regular Courses Homework will be a major part of a nightly routine Teacher directed activities and learning Daily drill of new learning Review sheets often given before tests

PreAP Courses Pre-AP is self select for students who are independent learners and want a more academically challenging curriculum These classes help prepare students who have aspirations of taking AP or Dual Credit Courses in HS 7 th grade level Pre-AP is the 8 th grade math 8 th grade level is high school Algebra class

PreAP Courses Students should be comfortable with contributing to classroom discussions Designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in college level coursework Pre-AP is not a prerequisite for enrolling in Advanced Placement (AP) courses Offers strategies that encourage independent learning and prepares students for the accelerated pace of AP classes.

PreAP-GT Courses PreAP-GT status is based on GT screening from the fall of the year prior to qualifying Texas Performance Standards Project Services gifted students in core subjects: English/LA - Math - Science - Social Studies

How Can Students Prepare for the Intermediate School Experience?

Students Can Prepare by… Make any course selection changes/decisions by June 9, 2016. Begin to strengthen organizational skills Master all math facts Read, read, read, especially during the summer – novels, non-fiction and current events Relax!

Remember… June 9, 2016 is the last day to make Course Selection Changes. All changes need to be done through your Elementary School Campus before the deadline.

Parents Take a deep breath! Help your child make a wise elective choice Talk with your child’s 5 th grade teacher about subject level placement (Regulars vs. Pre-AP) Listen to your child Ask LOTS of questions

Express confidence in his or her ability to solve problems Insist that he or she accept responsibility for himself or herself Do NOT accept zeroes as grades! Check assignments nightly in planner Check teacher websites to verify assignments
