What is Matter? Add matter to your table of contents. Turn to next clean page. Label MATTER at the top.
3
matter Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter
4
atom The smallest particle of matter
5
nucleus The dense area in the center of an atom. Inside the nucleus of every atom are smaller particles called protons, electrons, and neutrons.
6
molecule A molecule is made up to two or more atoms joined together. Water is a molecule made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
7
How do you identify matter? We identify matter by its properties –How it tastes, looks, and feels –Its size, shape, and color
8
How do you measure matter? Mass- a measure of the amount of matter in an object Volume- how much space a sample of matter takes up. EX- a golf ball and a balloon…. –A golf ball has more mass because if you put it on a balance scale with a balloon, the golf ball side would tip more. But a BALLOON has more volume because it takes up more space.
9
What is the difference between Mass and Weight? Mass- A measure of how much matter an object has Weight- is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls on that matter. EX: if you were to travel to the moon your weight would change because the pull of gravity is weaker there than on Earth but, your mass would stay the same because you are still made up of the same amount of matter
10
volume The amount of space an object takes up Another word for volume is capacity
11
Density- Density is an object’s mass divided by volume –D= m/v Density refers to how closely packed molecules of matter are
12
States of Matter The Three States of Matter Three States Solid Liquid Gas Chumbler - Properties of Matter11
13
Solid Has a fixed shape Has a fixed volume Particles are arranged in a tight, regular pattern Particles move very little
14
Examples of Solids are Ice Frog Cheese Bricks Wood Popcicle
15
States of Matter Solids Particle Movement Examples Chumbler - Properties of Matter14

Check out the Following Site on Solids :Solids
17
Liquid Has no fixed shape Has a fixed volume Particles move past one another easily Particles are fairly close, but not in a neat even arrangement as the particles in a solid are
18
Examples of Liquids are Orange Juice Water Soft drinks Milk Rubbing Alcohol Vinegar

Check out the following Site on Liquids :Liquids
21
Gas Has no fixed shape Has no fixed volume Made of particles that move rapidly The particles also have large spaces between them in comparison to solids and liquids
22
Examples of Gases are Steam Oxygen Carbon dioxide Smog Tear Gas Helium

NOTES Matter- Anything that has mass and takes up space. The smallest part of matter is called the ATOM. Identify matter by properties: size, color, shape, how it tastes looks, and feels How We Measure Matter: Mass- amount of matter in an object Volume- How much SPACE an object takes up Density- How closely packed the atoms are in a sample of matter Write these notes at the top of your page
27
NOTES Take your 3 folded cut outs- (solid, liquid and gas) and glue them to the BOTTOM of your journal page Gas Solid Liquid
28
SolidLiquidGas Has a definite shape Takes on shape of container Does not have definite shape Particles are close together and move slowly Particles are farther apart and faster moving Particles are farthest apart and move rapidly Has fixed volume Expands to take up whatever space is available Add these to the inside of each foldable

NOTES Matter- Anything that has _____ and takes up _____. The smallest part of matter is called the ______. Identify matter by properties: ____, color, _____, how it tastes looks, and ______ How We Measure Matter: Mass- amount of _____ in an _______ Volume- How much _______ an object ______ ___ Density- How ________ _______ the atoms are in a sample of ________ Write these notes at the top of your page
