Mr. Gifford’s 5 th Grade Math Lesson #8 Looking for Patterns.

Math is all about Patterns. Recognizing the patterns is something a good mathematician is able to do. However it takes lots of practice.

Here are some patterns that you might see. When you count by 2, 3, or 10 2,4,6,8,10 (increase by 2) 3,6,9,12,15 (increase by 3) 10,20,30,40,(increase by 10)

Decimals are all patterns using the same digits as whole numbers. The grid below is a good way to discover patterns in decimals. 0.10.20.30.41.0 1.21.41.82.0 2.12.52.73.0

Now that you have seen the pattern, let’s finish the girds. 0.10.20.30.40.50.60.70.80.91.0 1.11.21.31.41.51.61.71.81.92.0 2.12.22.32.42.52.62.72.82.93.0

Notice that from Left to Right the numbers go in counting order. 0.10.20.30.40.50.60.70.80.91.0 1.11.21.31.41.51.61.71.81.92.0 2.12.22.32.42.52.62.72.82.93.0

Notice that from Top to Bottom the numbers go in counting order while adding the same digit in a new place value. 0.10.20.30.40.50.60.72.80.91.0 1.11.21.31.41.51.61.71.81.92.0 2.12.22.32.42.52.62.72.82.93.0

These patterns will continue FOREVER in either direction and will create a pattern with ANY DECIMAL. 0.010.020.030.050.080.090.10 0.110.120.130.150.180.190.20 0.210.220.230.250.280.290.30

Now you it is your turn to try these patterns out. Fill in the blank spots. 0.340.35 0.340.35 0.44 0.55 0.640.65

Next Pattern. Fill in the missing blanks. 0.2010.2030.206 0.214 0.2210.223 0.235

0.2010.2020.2030.2040.206 0.2110.2120.2130.2140.2150.216 0.2210.2230.2250.226 0.2310.2320.2340.235 Here are the Answers

Here is the next pattern. Fill in the missing numbers. 0.7460.749 0.757 0.768 0.776

0.7460.7470.7480.749 0.7560.7570.759 0.7660.7670.7680.769 0.7760.7780.779 Here are is the answer.

Good work. Go to the links below to assess what you have learned. Thank you and see you next lesson. http://www.funbrain.com/cracker/i ndex.html http://www.funtrivia.com/newflash/t rivia.cfm?qid=330171
