Sandra Cisneros Born in the Hispanic Quarter of Chicago in l954… DO THE MATH! Mexican-American woman (Chicana) Third child and only daughter in a family of SEVEN children. Her family moved often; she was shy and introverted, but she connected with the community through writing Her parents emphasized education Loyola University of Chicago (English major). Decided to become a writer Attended the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop, a graduate school for young writers Teacher and counselor to high school dropouts Taught creative writing

Sandra Cisneros was always afraid that her unprivileged background would put her at a disadvantage in the literary world. She was worried that growing up in a poor neighborhood, being a Mexican-American, and being a woman would hurt her writing career.

ISN’T IT IRONIC? However, it is Sandra’s IDENTITY that gave her the unique voice that shaped her career! Instead of trying to HIDE who she was… she was honest. She shared her identity with the world. … And it worked out quite well for her!

The House on Mango Street The main character’s name is Esperanza. The novel is a reflection of a female Mexican-American’s experience in the 1960’s.

United Nations: Human Rights Human rights are rights inherent to ALL humans beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all EQUALLY entitled to our human rights, without discrimination.

Human Rights Rights to which people are entitled simply because they are human beings, regardless of their nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Agreed standards that recognize and protect the dignity and integrity of every individual without any distinction

WHILE READING HOMS… While reading, take note of circumstances and issues that make human rights a theme in The House on Mango Street. Also, take note of the narrator’s culture. How does it affect her lifestyle? Is it a theme in the novel as well?

Vignettes The House on Mango Street is a series of vignettes, or brief literary descriptions. One chapter does not relate to the next, but each is its own short story within itself. The vignettes still relate to one another because of Cisneros style (her use of literary devices).
