Why a Bill of Rights? Though most states had their own Bill of Rights, the Anti-federalists would not sign the Constitution without one! They were worried!

The 1 st Amendment Freedom of press Freedom of Speech

The 1 st Amendment Freedom of Religion Freedom of Assembly Freedom of Petition

The 2 nd Amendment The right to bear arms and maintain militia Not all arms!

The 3 rd Amendment Restricts quartering of troops Not valid during emergencies!

The 4 th Amendment The need for probable cause, search warrants, and arrest warrants Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures

The 5 th Amendment Assures the right not to be deprived of “life, liberty, or property, without due process of law” Includes protection against double jeopardy… Self incrimination… Seizure of property w/o compensation

The 6 th Amendment Guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury

The 7 th Amendment Trial by jury, though small claims is a judge

The Eighth Amendment Protects against excessive bail, Cruel and unusual punishment

Amendment 9 People’s rights are not restricted to only those in the Constitution! Amendment 10 Restates federalism: powers not listed for the federal governerment belong the states and people!
