5 Symptoms of Schizophrenia The symptoms of schizophrenia fall into three broad categories: Positive symptoms – psychotic behaviors not seen in healthy people Negative symptoms – associated with disruptions to normal emotions and behaviors. Cognitive symptoms – subtle symptoms that are often undetected

6 The two main symptoms are: Positive Symptoms of Schizophrenia Hallucinations Delusions

7 Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia Flat affect Lack of pleasure in everyday life and the ability to begin and sustain planned activities Speaking little, even when forced to interact

8 Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia Poor ability to understand information and use it to make decisions Trouble focusing or paying attention Problems with the ability to use information immediately after learning it

9 Average Age of Onset Symptoms begin to appear between the ages of 16 and 30 These symptoms appear earlier in men than women Teenagers are hard to diagnose because during these years, teens typically begin to change behaviors

10 Prevalence Rate The Prevalence Rate for schizophrenia is approximately 1.1% of the population over the age of 18 or, in other words, at any one time as many as 51 million people worldwide suffer from schizophrenia, including; 6 to 12 million people in China (a rough estimate based on the population) 4.3 to 8.7 million people in India (a rough estimate based on the population) 2.2 million people in USA 285,000 people in Australia Over 280,000 people in Canada
