C RITERIA FOR A BNORMAL B EHAVIOR

C ONTEXT OF THE B EHAVIOR This is a subjective judgment but you know that some behaviors are clearly bizarre in a given situation. Examples?

P ERSISTENCE OF BEHAVIOR We all have our “crazy” moments. A person may exhibit abnormal behavior on occasion without necessarily demonstrating the presence of mental illness.

S OCIAL D EVIANCE When a person’s behavior radically violates expectations and norms… it may meet criteria for social deviance.

S UBJECTIVE D ISTRESS Frequently we are aware of our own psychological difficulties suffering they are causing us.

P SYCHOLOGICAL H ANDICAP When a person has great difficulty being satisfied with life due to psychological problems this is considered to be a psychological handicap.

E FFECT ON F UNCTIONING The extent to which the behaviors in question interfere with a person’s ability to live the life that he or she desires, and that society will accept, may be the most important factor in diagnosing psychological problems. A behavior could be bizarre and persistent, but if it does not impair your ability to function in life, pathology may NOT need to be indicated.

M OOD D ISORDERS Mood Disorders characterized by emotional extremes Major Depressive Disorder a mood disorder in which a person, for no apparent reason, experiences two or more weeks of depressed moods, feelings of worthlessness, and diminished interest or pleasure in most activities
