Environmental Problems - Greenhouse Effect - Global Warming - Acid Rain
3
Greenhouse Effect The gases of the atmosphere let the sun’s heat pass through but stop them from living so the temperature of the Earth is hotter. Scientists call this “The Greenhouse Effect”.
4
WHY IS IT HAPPENING? Pollution sends 4 main ‘greenghouse gases’ into the atmosphere. These are: 1_Carbon dioxide (CO2) 2_ CFCs (Chloro-fluoro-carbons) 3_ Methane 4_ Nitrous Oxide
5
HOW CAN WE STOP IT? 1 )Conserve fossil fuels 2)Conserve rainforests 3) Use natural energy 4) Ban CFCs
6
GLOBAL WARMING The temperature of the Earth is getting hotter. Scientists call this problem “Global Warming”.
7
ACID RAIN Modern industry produces a lot of dangerous gases. Two of the most dangerous are sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. To stop pollution near factories and power stations, these gases enter the atmosphere from tall chimneys. Then they mix with water in the air. After that the wind carries them for hundreds or ever thousands of kilometres. Finally, the mixture of water and chemicals falls back to Earth as acid rain.
8
IS IT POSSIBLE TO STOP ACID RAIN? The short answer is yes’, but not quickly or easily. That’s because money is at the center of the acid rain problem. It’s not cheap to make power station or factories cleaner. In other words, less acid rain means more expensive electricity. Even so, that’s a price which some countries are ready to pay.
