Warm Up What is: an earthquake? A volcano? Can they be dangerous? Why?

New PBIS Textbook – Ever-Changing Earth I will need a volunteer from each row to go back and get enough copies of our new textbook for everyone

What is the Structure of Earth? Open your textbook and turn to page EE59

Question Do you think earth is covered by one solid unbroken piece or do you think that there are breaks in the covering of the earth? What are some clues?

What is the Structure of Earth? Turn now to page EE 60

Let’s think about what we just read By studying pictures we can get clues as to whether earth’s surface is continuous or broken. You may also be able to infer what moves when there are earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Observe these pictures… Turn to pages EE 61 –EE 62 to view various pictures Working with your table partner, you will answer questions at the bottom of EE 60 in your interactive notebooks I will assign each table a specific group of pictures to study; you and your table partner will then answer the questions Group #1 = Mount St. Helens Eruption 1980 Group #2 = Guatemalan Earthquake 1976 Group #3 = Birth of the Isle of Surtsey 1963 Does anyone have any questions about this activity? 10 minutes! GO!

3 Corners.... Go to the part of the room where other groups of students studied the same picture as you. Discuss each group’s answers to the questions, compare ideas, and determine what questions you may still have Group #1 = meet at the TV Mount St. Helens Eruption 1980 Group #2 = at the pencil sharpener Guatemalan Earthquake 1976 Group #3 = at the glass cabinet Birth of the Isle of Surtsey 1963 You have 3 minutes.. GO…

Poster Creation with your table partner (30 minutes) 1. Title 2. Before/After picture. What changed? 3. How do you think a volcano erupts or how does an earthquake occur. 4. Other stuff you’d like to know about earthquakes or volcanoes. 5. How does the picture you studied help you to think about if the earth is one continuous structure or one that is made up of many pieces.
